How to Set the Table in English
Setting the table properly is an important etiquette skill to master, especially when it comes to hosting guests or formal occasions. In this article, we will guide you on how to set the table in English, following the traditional American dining etiquette.
1. Placement of Utensils
When setting the table, start by placing the dinner plate in the center. To the left of the plate, position the fork. To the right of the plate, place the knife (with the sharp edge facing inward) and the spoon. If necessary, another smaller spoon or knife can be placed above the plate for dessert.
2. Napkins and Glasses
The napkin can be folded and placed either to the left of the fork or on top of the plate. As for glasses, they should be arranged above the knife in a diagonal line from right to left. Typically, water glasses are placed closest to the plate, followed by wine glasses if applicable.
3. Bread and Butter
If serving bread and butter, a small side plate should be placed above the fork on the left side. The butter knife should be placed diagonally on top of the side plate, with the blade facing inward.
Remember, the table setting may vary depending on the occasion and the type of meal being served. It is always good to consider the formality level and personal preferences of your guests when setting the table.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your table is properly set according to English dining etiquette. Enjoy your meal!
